But, Aren’t You Scared?

Heck, NO! But it wasn’t always this way…

A little over a month and a half ago, I moved out to Los Angeles. As much as it was a dream come true, and something I’ve wanted to do my whole life, it was still a little scary. I mean, come on, I moved to a whole other country, in a different time zone, with the fastest way for someone from home to get to me being by taking a six hour plane ride. I left everyone and everything behind…my family, my friends, all that I am used to. Thankfully, my mom came with me to settle me into my apartment, but she left a few days later and at that point, I was all on my own.

Not only did I have to adjust to a whole new lifestyle living in an unknown area, but I also had to adjust myself to a whole new working environment, where I knew no one at first. Besides that, I had to learn how to fend for myself, as my mother was no longer around to do everything for me. Cooking, cleaning, doing laundry, yes, I’ve done this in the past for maybe a week when my parents went on vacation, but doing all of this for three months? Whattttt? Definitely a first. Every night back home, I had my parents to come home to, to tell them about my day, to vent when something went wrong. Now, I come home to an empty apartment, and being three hours back, when I get home from work, it’s already late on the East Coast. All this to say, yes, I was scared at first!

Having now lived on my own for over a month and a half now though, I have to say, that fear is completely, 100% gone. Life is all about adjustments. Things are always scary at first. Do you remember your first day of high school? Weren’t you scared? By the end of your five years year though, I bet you were ruling the place. What about University? Your first job? Weren’t you even just a little uncomfortable, or nervous for your first few days? Of course, the majority of us are. It’s human nature. As they say though, it takes three weeks, 21 days, to adjust to something new. Thankfully, I adapt to new situations very quickly so for me, the whole living-alone-and-having-to-fend-for-myself took me about three days to get adjusted to, but work? That took me about three weeks before I became fully comfortable, before I started talking more, before I started really being me. I don’t know if it’s a mental thing but it really did take exactly three weeks at my job to get used to it fully.

Bottom line, we are all scared of getting out of our comfort zone. We all have big dreams, but 90% of us are scared to take the appropriate steps in the right direction, because we know that it will require us to do things for the first time, which we may not feel ready for. Trust me when I say, you are more ready than you think. Opportunity only knocks once, so make sure that when that chance comes to you, you fully embrace it and go along with it. There is a saying that says “if it scares you, you know you’re heading in the right direction.” The only way to really get advanced in life is to trust your gut and just go for it. There will be an adjustment period, but like everything, you will get used to it.

I now never want to go home. #WestCoastIsTheBestCoast hahahaha.
