My Latest Encounter With Charlie Walk!

If you’ve been reading my blog, you know who I’ll be writing about in this post, as I’ve written about this individual a few times in the past.

Just to recap, Mr. Charlie Walk was the former Executive Vice President of the #1 record label in the nation (for four consecutive years now) – Republic Records. He has recently been promoted to President of Republic Group, a new division of Republic Records, which puts more of a focus on developing artists. As Mr. Walk has told Billboard.com, he “do[esn’t] want to work great records, [he] want[s] to work great artists.”

For several years now, I have looked up to Mr. Walk – I don’t say I want to be just like him, because I believe that everyone should aim to be unique & be their own person, but I will say that I hope to have the same amount of respect as he does in this thing we call the “music industry” and I hope to make people feel just like he has made me feel whenever we’ve met – important.

To recap, the first time I met Mr. CW and spoke with him was at the New Music Seminar, in New York City, in June of 2014. He was the Moderator for the panel discussing “Radio”, (appropriate, seeing as he’s been called the King of Radio in the past). When the discussion was over, I had the chance to go up to Mr. Walk, briefly introduce myself & speak to him.

The next time I saw Charlie was in November of that same year, in New York City, when he was honored at Musicians On Call’s 15th Anniversary Celebration. Being one of the spotlighted individuals that night, he was busy chatting with many, but I still had the chance to see him, take a picture & say a few words.

Ever since our last encounter, I’ve been hoping to see CW again, but I had no luck with that – well, as they say, most of the greatest moments happen unexpectedly.

Three weeks ago, I was in Los Angeles for a few days. Naturally, I follow Charlie on social media (which you should all do as well – username is @charliewalk for Snapchat, Twitter & Instagram) and funny enough, I saw he was also in Los Angeles. Now for some reason, when I saw that, I had a feeling I would run into him while we were both there. Saturday came along – the day of the Radio Disney Music Awards, which were held at the Microsoft Theater. I decided to head to the area to check out the scene & to see if I could get last minute “seat filler” tickets. That didn’t end up working out, but I still stuck around. The end of the show came about and security placed gates around a door – naturally, I was curious, so I stayed around there, as did many others. At one point, Disney television actors started coming out and headed into another building where the gates led to – apparently, the after party was being held there. Actor after actor came out with their entourage …and then, SO DID CHARLIE WALK. I couldn’t believe it. It was just so unexpected. There was a gate separating us but I screamed out his name, he looked up, mouthed “it’s so nice to see you” and gave me his hand. My feeling was right. A year and a half later, I had finally seen my idol again!!!

Okay so just to set the scene, the Microsoft Theater is part of a complex called LA Live which also includes the Staples Center, ESPN LA among other buildings with clubs & restaurants. It’s all connected by walking paths and surrounded by streets. About a half hour after that encounter, I so happened to be leaning against one of the buildings in the complex, facing one of the pedestrian walkways. I turned around and no joke, Charlie was walking right down the path. Okay now I really couldn’t believe what I was seeing, or rather, who I was seeing! I went up to him and he gave me a hug. He had to run to an event but again, as always, was kind enough to chat with me for a few quick minutes. With his promotion as President of Republic Group, I really wanted to congratulate him in person, so I did just that. I told Charlie how truly happy I am for him and how I can’t wait to see the great things he will do with his new appointment! He looked sincerely thankful and kept saying just that, “thank you”. We then took a picture and exchanged a few more words. I can’t describe the moment. I truly believe everything happens for a reason – nothing is random. I don’t know why we met again, but I know that I will eventually find out.

I know, I know – it’s common to hear of individuals who look up to well known public figures; not as common though to hear of individuals who look up to powerful players in the industry they strive to be a part of – I’ve been called “crazy” many times, but I was recently shown a message one of my family members received and this gave me a whole other perspective – “I just couldn’t believe [that Giuliana] was so enthralled with an executive, not a star. For [her] to idolize someone who works hard, and is a great businessman, that says a lot about her.” I strive to be a successful #GirlBoss one day, so I make sure to idolize the right people for that.

Mr. Charlie Walk, if by chance you are reading this, I want to make one thing clear. I am not a crazy, obsessive person or fan of yours, rather, I am someone who strives to follow in a path similar to yours. You are so knowledgeable, so respected, so kind – you make me feel important – and I hope to be seen in the same way one day, I hope to make individuals feel the way you’ve made me feel! And PS – it would be a dream come true to get to sit down with you & speak to you a little more, just sayinnnn! 🙂 Hey, if you don’t ask, you’ll never know!
